Our take: 57˚ Mala Xiang Guo in Yishun generally receives high marks for its mala dishes, with many praising the spiciness and flavour.
We note that the ingredients are often described as fresh, and the mutton is highlighted as tender.
The self-service pickled vegetable bar is a welcome addition.
However, there are inconsistencies in other menu items; the Laziji and fried rice have been called disappointing, lacking wok hei and sometimes overcooked.
A significant concern is the feedback regarding the Sichuan Fish with Pickled Mustard Greens, which some found to have an unpleasant, stale oil taste, coupled with reports of unhelpful and rude staff responses to complaints.
While the mala dishes seem to be a strong point, and the grilled sea bass is noted for its generous portion and quick service (around 10 minutes), the ventilation could be improved as some customers report leaving smelling of food.
We'd recommend sticking to the signature Mala Xiang Guo, especially the grilled fish options, and be prepared for potential service issues if non-mala dishes don't meet expectations.
The $6 brown sugar rice cakes are a good dessert option.
