Our take: Hai Liang Mala Hotpot Mala Xiang Guo receives mixed reviews, with a recurring theme of inconsistency in food quality.
While some patrons appreciate the fresh, neatly displayed ingredients and the option for a less oily mala, others find the Mala Xiang Guo bland, overcooked, or simply too spicy without the characteristic numbing sensation of peppercorns.
The price point for meat, at $4 per 100g, is noted as higher than competitors, which, combined with the perceived drop in standard, makes it a less attractive option for some.
The preparation can also be inconsistent, with instances of charred taupok and soggy noodles reported.
We'd suggest managing expectations regarding the mala's flavour profile, as it leans more towards pure spice than the traditional numbing sensation.
Best for those in the immediate vicinity looking for a quick, convenient option, but perhaps not a destination for a consistently high-quality mala experience.

Ingredients are chopped into bite sized pieces which is good. The Mala here is just spicy, no peppercorn numbing. Taste is average. $13 for a single-person serve.
The mala stall here changed a few times. It was pretty good before this owner. The grilled fish was quite good. Then it changed to the current owner. The mlxg is really quite bland and always overcook…
Ordered Ma La Xiang Guo, with little spicy, taste good and not oily! The ingredients are fresh and clean, and neatly displayed.
