Editor’s Note

Last updated 30 May 2026

Our take on Newton Old Signboard 25 is that it's a polarizing spot for Hokkien Mee.

We see consistent praise for the 'wet' style of Hokkien Mee, with many highlighting the rich stock, smoky flavour, and the effective combination of chilli and lime.

The $8 Hokkien Mee is described as having strong wok hei, a mix of yellow noodles and bee hoon, and generous toppings like prawns, squid, and pork belly.

The chilli is frequently singled out for its spiciness and sour notes, complementing the dish well.

However, we also note significant criticisms.

Some diners found the Hokkien Mee to be poor in taste, with an overpowering alkaline flavour from the noodles.

There are also complaints about the quality of ingredients, specifically sandy clams in the fried lala, and a perceived lack of value for the $9 portion, which some felt had insufficient protein.

The wok hei, while praised by some, was considered too subtle by others.

We think this spot is best for those who prefer a wetter, flavourful Hokkien Mee and are willing to overlook potential inconsistencies in ingredient quality.

It's a destination for specific taste preferences, not a universally acclaimed hawker stall.

What customers say

Public sentiment for Newton Old Signboard 25 is mixed, primarily focusing on their Hokkien Mee.

While many praise its authentic flavors, strong wok hei, and the excellent chili and lime combination, others are highly critical of the noodle's quality, presence of sand in seafood, and perceived high price for portion size.

The alkaline taste in the noodles is a recurring negative point.

Super delicious and flavorful wet hokkien mee (cooked with bee hoon)! The noodles soaked up the gravy perfectly and even after a long time of eating, the gravy didn't dry up. The chilli was seriously…

Sorry it’s not good at all. The Hokkien mee tastes bad and the alkaline taste from noodles is too strong. Where’s the 0 star rating??

One of the more expensive FHKM we had . For $9 , it comes with 3 prawns , one ring of sotong , and no pork slices? Noodles were tough on some as the noodles are pre - cooked and put aside .
