Editor’s Note

Last updated 29 May 2026

Our take: OLD CHANG SHENG JIAN BAO is a solid spot for its namesake 生煎包 (Sheng Jian Bao), which consistently receives praise for its juicy pork filling.

We'd recommend being mindful of their operating hours, as last orders can be as early as 6:30 PM, and the Sheng Jian Bao itself is sometimes unavailable between lunch and dinner service.

While the Sheng Jian Bao is a highlight, some diners have noted that the portion size for items like the 口水鸡捞面 (Sichuan Peppercorn Chicken Noodles) could be more generous.

Expect a wait of around 20 minutes for the Sheng Jian Bao, especially during peak lunch hours, though it arrives piping hot.

The Scallion Oil Noodles are also a strong contender if you're looking for a larger, satisfying dish.

Overall, it's a reliable choice if you're in the Queenstown area, particularly for a satisfying Sheng Jian Bao fix, but don't expect lightning-fast service during busy periods.

What customers say

Customers generally praise OLD CHANG SHENG JIAN BAO for its delicious and juicy 生煎包, often highlighting the fragrant pork filling and the risk of scalding due to the hot juices.

The Scallion Oil Noodles and 口水鸡捞面 are also well-received, though some find noodle portions small.

While considered a hidden gem with reasonable prices, some experiences include wet utensils, longer wait times for food, and the 生煎包 being unavailable between lunch and dinner service.

Good food for reasonable prices. Quite a hidden spot that requires some walking past the main road. They may start taking last orders at 6.30pm, so best to go latest at 6-6.15pm

Came here for dinner, wasn't very crowded and plenty of seating. 生煎包 were lovely and full of juices! Be careful not to get your tongue scalded! Noodles and mains were good. Will definitely come again.

Great food. Highly recommended: 煎包. Fragrant juicy pork filling. 口水鸡捞面. Their Sichuan peppercorn oil is very fragrant. Chicken is tender and tasty. Noodles portion can be bigger though.
